Editor’s note: This story will be updated following testimony this afternoon.

Ronny Scott Cooper, sitting in a wheelchair at the defense table and facing life in prison if convicted of armed carjacking, appeared dejected.

In March 2019, sheriff’s deputies said Cooper stole a vehicle at gunpoint from a motorist at the Petro Truck Rest Stop at 7401 W. County Road 318 in Irvine. The victim, later identified as a 17-year-old girl from Kentucky, told authorities that she was pumping gas when a man believed to be Cooper asked if she was driving to Lake City. When she said “no,” the man pulled out a gun and demanded cash and her older model GMC Sierra. The robber allowed her to keep her wallet, got into the vehicle and drove away. The weapon was a pellet gun, officials said.
