Bangkok Post – 37 million speed pills seized in 15 recent raids

According to police, almost a ton of crystal meth and other drugs were also found in 42 arrests in two weeks

Drug enforcement police arrested 42 suspects from April 29 to May 15 and seized more than 37 million speed pills, nearly a ton of crystal methamphetamine and other drugs in 15 major cases.

Police Lt. Gen. Samran Nuanma, a deputy national police chief, led a news conference on Thursday to detail the events that led to the arrests and seizures at various locations across the country.

Authorities seized 37,286,000 speed pills, 942 kilograms of crystal meth, 80 kilograms of heroin and 70 kilograms of ketamine, he said. Of the 42 suspects, 25 cars and pickup trucks and three motorcycles were also confiscated.

In the first case, a man and a woman were arrested after 11.95 million speed pills were found hidden in their pickup truck in Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi district. The drugs were smuggled from the northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom. The only suspects were Theeraphat and Nongnut.

In the second case, Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) police and officers from other agencies arrested Sunate, the driver of a truck loaded with molasses, at a vehicle checkpoint in Chumphon’s Tha Sae district after 5 million speed pills were found hidden in the truck. Another suspect, identified only as Disawat, who was driving a pickup truck to scout the route, was arrested in Lang Suan district in the southern province.

The drugs were smuggled from the north to be delivered to dealers in the south, police said.

In the third case, two men, identified only as Ramen and Natthaphol, were arrested in Nakhon Sawan after 2.9 million speed pills and 150kg of crystal meth were found hidden in their pickup truck. The drugs smuggled from Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district were destined for Saraburi.

In the fourth case, police arrested two men – Jetsada and Surachate – in Sukhothai’s Sri Satchanalai district and seized 1.25 million speed tablets hidden in their car. Another accomplice, identified only as Thotsaphon, was arrested at a drug checkpoint in the same district. The three were in the process of delivering the drugs to a customer in the Central Plains.

In the fifth case, three men and three women were arrested at a vehicle checkpoint in Chumphon after a million speed pills were found hidden in their vehicle.

In the sixth case, three young women were arrested in Tak after 202,000 speed tablets were found in one of the two cars they were driving.

The remaining suspects and other drugs were seized in Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and other central and northeastern provinces, police Lt. Gen. Samran said.
