Several police officers were taken to hospital after a mysterious substance was sprayed on them while responding to a small fire in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police responded to an incident in Tyburn at around 2.20am today after a man barricaded himself in a property. When they arrived, they discovered a small fire in a stairwell of the apartment block and were able to put it out.

But seconds later, an unknown liquid – believed to be ammonia – was sprayed on the four officers. A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and physical violence against police officers and is currently in custody. The police officers were taken to the hospital.

Superintendent Sam Batey, of Birmingham Police, said: “Our main priority was to keep residents safe and from the body-worn videos we feel our officers showed serious bravery in the face of what was presented to them. She and we are being treated for their injuries and are confident they will make a full recovery.

“We have a man in custody and he is being interviewed this morning and our investigation is progressing.”
