Burglar breaks through ceiling of Southern California gym

Surveillance cameras captured a man armed with a knife breaking into a local gym in the South Bay and Harbor area of Los Angeles.

The break-in occurred early Wednesday morning around 1 a.m. at Mindful Gainz on Anaheim Street and Broad Avenue.

Footage of the incident shows the thief walking into the gym wearing a dark hoodie and pulling out the security camera.

The gym’s owner, Erik Esquivel, entered the mess left by the burglar, who entered the business through the ceiling.

“I guess there’s a room upstairs,” he told KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “They tore up the floor and hit a cable. I don’t know what they were looking for.”

It’s unclear if the suspect was squatting in the empty room upstairs, but during the break-in he caused more than $1,000 in damage to Esquivel’s store.

“He had a knife,” the gym owner said. “I’m just glad no one was here so early and he was able to leave without anything serious happening.”

At Power Fitness, just a block away, a burglar hit the store Saturday morning. The owner of this gym said it was the third time this year alone that his business had been targeted.

Southern California man, 40, charged with two counts of rape on Highway 39

“It’s disheartening that this is happening,” Esquivel said. “Many people work hard to start a business. I’m just trying to create a beautiful place, a community where everyone can come together and train. It is disappointing that this is the case in our community. Hopefully someone knows him and can say something.”

Anyone who may recognize the thief is asked to contact the Los Angeles Police Department.
